STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – A sharp drop in temperatures will grip much of central and western Pennsylvania late this week, as a Freeze Watch remains in effect through Friday morning. The National Weather Service warns that overnight lows could fall into the upper 20s, potentially ending the region’s growing season.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Frost Advisory begins early Thursday from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m., followed by a Freeze Watch Thursday evening through Friday morning. The advisory includes Cambria, Cameron, Clearfield, Elk, Potter, Somerset, Tioga, and Warren counties.

Frost and freeze conditions could kill unprotected crops, gardens, and sensitive plants. Homeowners are urged to cover vegetation or bring potted plants indoors. Uninsulated outdoor plumbing could also be at risk if temperatures dip below freezing for several hours.

Subfreezing temperatures are expected to last long enough to mark a potential end to the growing season across northern and central Pennsylvania. Agricultural producers and gardeners should take protective measures before Thursday night.

Warnings remain in effect through Friday morning.
