Somerset, Pa. – Flash flooding could threaten parts of central Pennsylvania late Thursday night as a potent round of thunderstorms dumps heavy rain on already saturated ground.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Flood Watch is in effect from 4 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for Somerset and Bedford counties. The storms are expected to bring intense downpours capable of producing runoff that may flood low-lying roads, creeks, and poor drainage areas.

Communities near waterways like the Stonycreek and Raystown Branch Juniata rivers should remain alert. Storm drains may overflow, and rural roads could become impassable by early morning. Residents in flood-prone areas should move valuables to higher ground and be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways—just 12 inches of moving water can carry away most vehicles. Power outages and delays in morning commutes are also possible, particularly in areas where storm debris blocks culverts.

Rain is expected to taper off mid-morning Friday, but saturated conditions mean the flash flood risk may linger through the day. Additional watches or warnings could be issued overnight.
