Somerset, Pennsylvania – Snow-covered roads and sudden drops in visibility could make travel difficult across Somerset County beginning Sunday morning as winter weather settles into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from Sunday morning through early Monday. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches are expected along the ridges, with lighter totals in the valleys. Snow squalls may develop at times, producing brief bursts of heavy snow that can quickly coat roadways. Wind gusts topping 40 mph are also possible, leading to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

The greatest travel impacts are expected during the late morning through evening hours Sunday, when snow showers and gusty winds overlap. Ridge-top roads and higher elevations could become slick quickly, while open areas may see drifting snow that reduces sightlines for drivers. Conditions may change rapidly during snow squalls, increasing the risk of spinouts and crashes.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions. Checking road updates through 511 before heading out is strongly recommended, especially for those traveling across higher terrain.

Snow showers should taper late Sunday night, but lingering slick spots are likely into early Monday as cold air remains in place. Additional advisories are possible if snow squalls become more frequent or intense.
