State College, PA – The National Weather Service in State College is alerting residents across central and south-central Pennsylvania to the possibility of isolated icy spots on roadways this evening as scattered snow showers continue to move through the region.
While snowfall amounts are expected to remain light, temperatures are dropping quickly enough to cause any wet or slushy surfaces to freeze, creating slick patches—especially in areas that have not been treated. The advisory covers multiple counties including Clearfield, Centre, Cambria, Blair, Huntingdon, Mifflin, Juniata, Somerset, Bedford, and Fulton.
Forecasters emphasize that bridges, overpasses, and entrance/exit ramps are often the first surfaces to ice over due to their exposure to cold air on all sides. Even brief snow showers can leave behind just enough moisture to produce hazardous conditions once temperatures slip below freezing.
Drivers heading out tonight should be prepared for rapidly changing travel conditions, particularly in higher elevations and rural areas where road treatments may be more limited. Motorists are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance, and watch for areas of black ice that may be difficult to see under nighttime lighting.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve overnight as snow showers taper off toward early Saturday morning, but slick spots may persist in colder valleys and shaded roadways.
If you’re driving through the region this evening, stay alert and travel with caution.
