Pendleton, OR – Snow-covered roads and low visibility are already making travel dangerous across the east slopes of the Oregon Cascades, with conditions expected to worsen through Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. Thursday for areas including La Pine, Sunriver, Sisters, and Camp Sherman. Additional snowfall of up to 7 inches is expected, combined with wind gusts reaching 45 mph.

Periods of moderate to heavy snow will reduce visibility along key routes such as U.S. Highway 20 and nearby mountain roads, where blowing snow may create sudden whiteout conditions. Drivers could encounter rapidly changing road conditions, with slick pavement and drifting snow especially in exposed areas.

Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, creating additional hazards and the potential for isolated power outages in forested communities.

Officials strongly advise delaying travel. Those who must drive should carry chains, emergency supplies, and extra clothing in case of becoming stranded.

Hazardous conditions will persist through Thursday afternoon, with the warning set to expire at 5 p.m., though lingering impacts on roads may continue into the evening.
