Ohio greets the first full week of 2026 with cold pavement, muted skies, and breath hanging in the air. Cars scrape frost at daybreak, and sidewalks feel stiff underfoot as winter asserts itself early across central Ohio.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures around Columbus and Wilmington started the morning near 27 degrees under overcast skies. Winds remain calm, allowing cold air to settle. Highs reach the low 30s today, just warm enough to soften exposed surfaces by afternoon.

Travel impacts stay focused on the morning hours. Drivers along I-71, I-70, and U.S. 35 should watch for icy patches on bridges, ramps, and shaded roads. Flash freezing remains possible where moisture lingered from previous days. Plan extra time and ease into braking early.

Conditions shift noticeably as the week progresses. Monday brings partial sunshine and a fast warmup, with highs climbing into the mid-40s. Melting frost may leave damp pavement behind, which can refreeze after dark as temperatures dip near the low 30s.

By Tuesday, a stronger warm surge arrives. Highs jump into the low 50s as rain develops during the afternoon and evening. While snow is not expected, wet roads and lingering cold ground could still cause slick travel during the transition. Conditions may deteriorate quickly after sunset.

Wednesday trends quieter but remains mild for January. Highs settle near the low 50s with breaks of sun. Another round of rain becomes possible later Thursday as temperatures continue climbing toward the upper 50s.

Meteorologists are also tracking broader winter signals. Heavier snow is expected to return across the Great Lakes between January 17 and January 30. Central Ohio may see more rain-driven systems and temperature swings instead of prolonged snow cover.

For now, winter weather demands attention early, then flexibility later. How icy did roads feel on your drive this morning?
