Wilmington, Ohio – Frost sparkled across rooftops and open fields early Thursday as cold air settled deep into the Miami Valley. But the chill isn’t done yet — a Freeze Warning will grip much of central and southwest Ohio early Friday, signaling a firm end to the growing season.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, sub-freezing temperatures between 29°F and 32°F are expected from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday. The warning covers a wide stretch from Columbus to Dayton and into northern Kentucky, including counties along I-71 and I-75. Sensitive plants and unprotected pipes are most at risk. Residents are urged to drain sprinkler systems, wrap outdoor spigots, and bring in remaining potted plants before sunset Thursday.

Thursday will stay sunny and cool, with highs near 56°F and a west wind around 10 mph. Skies clear late, allowing another quick temperature drop. The coldest readings Friday morning are likely in rural lowlands, especially across Clinton, Fayette, and Greene counties.

By Friday afternoon, sunshine and light winds will help temperatures rebound near 57°F, bringing a calmer, more comfortable feel to close the week. The weekend starts mild — Saturday highs near 58°F, Sunday pushing near 60°F — but clouds return by Sunday night as a weak system approaches.

Beyond that, early next week looks unsettled with on-and-off rain chances. Long-range patterns suggest more Canadian air spilling south before Halloween, with the Midwest’s first measurable snow likely showing up in northern Wisconsin or Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. For Ohio, the theme is clear: frost now, flakes next.
