Columbus, Ohio – Arctic air is expected to remain a persistent influence across central Ohio from Jan. 24 through Jan. 30, keeping temperatures below normal and reinforcing mid-winter conditions across the region.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, central Ohio falls within a roughly 60 percent probability zone for below-normal temperatures during the Jan. 24–30 period. While the cold signal is not as strong as across the Great Lakes or Upper Midwest, the overall pattern still favors sustained chill with limited opportunities for meaningful warming before the end of the month.

Across the Columbus metro area and surrounding counties along the Interstate 70 and 71 corridors, daytime highs are expected to run below late-January averages, with overnight lows frequently dropping into the teens. Even during brief moderation periods, highs may struggle to climb out of the 20s, allowing icy patches to persist on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads.

Farther north toward Delaware and Marion, temperatures may trend slightly colder at times, while areas south toward Chillicothe may see marginally higher readings but still below normal overall. Any existing snow cover is likely to linger, increasing the risk of refreezing during overnight and early morning hours.

The Ohio Department of Transportation urges drivers to remain cautious during morning and nighttime travel, especially during periods of refreeze. Residents are encouraged to protect exposed pipes, limit prolonged outdoor exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets.

While confidence is moderate, the Arctic pattern shows limited signs of breaking before the end of the month, keeping below-normal temperatures favored across central Ohio through Jan. 30.
