Columbus, Ohio – Central Ohioans should brace for muggy, stormy weather through the weekend as a double threat of poor air quality and thunderstorms arrives just in time for Father’s Day celebrations.

According to the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, an Air Quality Alert is in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday across Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, and Licking counties due to elevated ozone levels. Residents are urged to limit driving, avoid idling vehicles, and postpone mowing or using gas-powered equipment until after 8 p.m.

Storm chances increase Friday afternoon with scattered thunderstorms likely between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Rainfall could exceed a quarter inch in heavier cells, and lightning may disrupt outdoor activities. High temperatures will hover near 84°F with light winds. Those traveling along I-70 and I-71 should remain weather-aware as conditions may deteriorate quickly.

Rain and storm chances persist into the weekend. Saturday and Sunday will stay humid with highs in the low 80s. Showers and thunderstorms are likely Saturday night and could intensify Sunday evening, particularly after 8 p.m.

Father’s Day festivities may need backup indoor plans as another round of storms approaches Sunday night.

Looking ahead to early next week, more storms are possible Monday and Tuesday before sunshine returns midweek.
