BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A widespread Freeze Warning has been issued for much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania, where temperatures are expected to fall into the mid-20s to low 30s from 11PM to 9AM EDT Friday. The National Weather Service said the coldest air of the season will settle over the region tonight, ending the growing season for most areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the warning covers Onondaga, Broome, Chenango, Tioga, Delaware, Otsego, Oneida, and surrounding counties in New York, and Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Wayne, and Wyoming Counties in Pennsylvania. Areas from Syracuse to Scranton will experience clear skies and calm winds overnight, allowing widespread frost and deep freezing temperatures by dawn Friday.

Residents are urged to protect outdoor plants and plumbing. Gardeners should bring in or cover tender vegetation, while homeowners should drain hoses and wrap exposed pipes. Agricultural officials say this freeze will effectively end the growing season across the Southern Tier and Northern Tier regions.

Drivers should also be prepared for frosted windshields and slippery bridges during the morning commute. Sunshine will return by midmorning, helping temperatures climb into the 40s and low 50s. Another chilly night is possible Friday before a gradual warm-up begins this weekend.
