Binghamton, N.Y. – Heavy rain drenched the Binghamton region Sunday afternoon through early Monday, flooding roadways and leaving parts of Central New York and Northern Pennsylvania soaked with over 2 inches of rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, trained spotters and local observers reported rainfall totals topping 2.39 inches in Greene, 2.13 inches in Wilkes-Barre, and 1.93 inches in Deposit between 8 a.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday. Binghamton itself recorded nearly 1.5 inches, while cities like Syracuse, Ithaca, and Elmira received between half an inch and 1 inch.
Localized flooding affected low-lying roads near Binghamton, Deposit, and Wilkes-Barre. Drivers encountered ponding on sections of Route 17 and Interstate 81. Emergency crews advised avoiding travel through flooded streets and parking lots, as even shallow water can sweep vehicles away. Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to clear drains and remain alert for updated advisories.
This marks one of the region’s wettest July weekends in recent years, with some towns surpassing their monthly average in just 24 hours. Similar heavy rain events last summer caused flash flooding and power outages across Broome and Susquehanna counties.
Rain chances linger through Tuesday, with more showers possible in the Southern Tier and Northeast Pennsylvania. Additional advisories could be issued if storms redevelop.
