BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A widespread hard freeze will grip much of central New York and northeast Pennsylvania overnight tonight, 11PM until 9AM Friday, bringing the coldest air of the season so far and ending the growing season across much of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for a broad area including Syracuse, Binghamton, Elmira, Ithaca, Oneonta, Utica, Scranton, and Montrose. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the mid-20s to lower 30s, with the coldest readings likely in sheltered valleys and higher elevations.

Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, and endanger tender vegetation. Residents are urged to cover or move plants indoors, drain hoses and sprinkler systems, and wrap exposed pipes before midnight. Pet owners should also bring animals inside or provide insulated shelter.

According to forecasters, clear skies and light winds will allow for efficient cooling through early Friday. Morning commuters should expect frosty windshields and slick spots on rural roads before sunrise, especially along I-81, I-88, and PA Route 6.

Milder afternoons are expected this weekend, but another cold front early next week could trigger another round of frosty mornings across the Twin Tiers and Southern Tier counties.
