Central North Carolina – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon across all of central North Carolina, with heavy snow, strong winds, and significant travel disruptions possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, snow accumulations of 5 to 8 inches are possible across the region, with locally higher amounts in some areas. Wind gusts are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph, increasing the risk of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
The watch includes the Triad, Triangle, Sandhills, and surrounding counties, covering cities such as Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, Fayetteville, Cary, Apex, Burlington, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, and Southern Pines.
Forecasters warn that the weight of heavy snow combined with gusty winds could bring down tree limbs and power lines, leading to sporadic power outages. Travel conditions may deteriorate rapidly, with roads becoming snow-covered and hazardous. Officials caution that travel could become dangerous or even impossible, with potential closures and infrastructure disruptions.
The most significant impacts are expected from Friday evening through the weekend, including the Friday evening commute, as snowfall intensifies and temperatures remain cold enough for snow to accumulate on roads.
Residents are urged to delay travel if possible, prepare emergency supplies, and closely monitor forecast updates. Those who must travel are advised to use extreme caution and carry a winter storm kit in case they become stranded.
