Raleigh, NC – Dangerous heat and humidity continue across much of central North Carolina Saturday, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect until 9 p.m. EDT as heat index values climb as high as 110 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, the advisory covers much of the southern and eastern Piedmont, Sandhills and Coastal Plain, where the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will create dangerous conditions throughout the afternoon and early evening.

The advisory includes the Raleigh-Durham metro area and surrounding communities such as Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, Chapel Hill, Durham, Hillsborough, Clayton, Smithfield, Goldsboro, Wilson, Rocky Mount, Fayetteville, Sanford, Southern Pines, Aberdeen, Laurinburg, Clinton, Roanoke Rapids, Henderson, Oxford, Louisburg, Nashville, Tarboro, Wadesboro and Rockingham, among many others.

Forecasters warn that prolonged exposure to the heat can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, particularly for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions and anyone working or exercising outdoors.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, stay in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day. Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and taking frequent breaks in shaded or cool locations can also help reduce the risk of heat stress.

Officials also recommend checking on relatives, neighbors and others who may be especially vulnerable to the dangerous heat.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion should move to a cooler place immediately and hydrate. If symptoms become severe or heat stroke is suspected, seek emergency medical assistance by calling 911.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. EDT Saturday, and residents should continue monitoring the latest forecasts for additional weather updates.
