Raleigh, N.C. – Heavy rain could cause localized flooding across central North Carolina today, with the greatest impacts expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Roads in low-lying and urban areas may quickly pond with water during the heaviest downpours.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, most locations can expect one-quarter to one-half inch of rain, but isolated areas could see 1–2 inches. Quick rises on small creeks and streams are possible, particularly in spots where storms repeatedly track over the same area. A marginal risk for excessive rainfall covers much of the state, with the highest flood potential south and east of Raleigh.

Cities including Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, Fayetteville, and Greensboro have a 50–70% chance of rain during the afternoon hours. Motorists are advised to slow down, watch for water-covered roads, and avoid driving through flooded areas. The NWS also recommends securing outdoor items and clearing drains where possible to reduce localized street flooding.

Rain chances taper after 9 p.m., but scattered showers may linger into the overnight hours. Additional alerts could be issued if storms develop more intensely than expected.
