Raleigh, NC – Strong storms are expected to move through central North Carolina on Wednesday, bringing the week’s highest chance for heavy rain and localized flooding. Areas from Wake County to Durham, Orange, and Johnston counties could see downpours during the afternoon and evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service, the region carries a marginal risk for excessive rainfall, with isolated pockets of minor flooding possible. Rainfall amounts may exceed a quarter inch in heavier cells, and wet roads could lead to slow travel on I-40, I-85, and US-70.

Storms may develop after late morning Wednesday, with rain chances reaching 70% by mid-afternoon. Showers and storms remain possible Tuesday and Friday as well, but the midweek system is expected to be the most impactful. Outdoor events, sports practices, and back-to-school errands could be disrupted, and residents are urged to monitor local alerts and avoid flooded roadways.

This active stretch continues into Friday before drier conditions return over the weekend. Additional advisories may be issued as storm timing becomes clearer.
