Raleigh, North Carolina – Increased fire danger is expected across central North Carolina Friday afternoon as low humidity and gusty winds combine to create favorable conditions for wildfire spread.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, relative humidity values are forecast to drop to around 20%, while wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph are expected across much of the region. These conditions can allow fires to ignite more easily and spread more quickly, especially in areas with dry fuels.
The greatest concern is across the western Piedmont and the Sandhills, particularly near and west of U.S. Route 1, where vegetation is driest. Fire danger will increase during the afternoon hours as winds strengthen and humidity reaches its lowest levels.
While no formal Red Flag Warning has been issued, the National Weather Service advises residents and outdoor workers to exercise caution with any activity that could spark a fire. Even small ignition sources can become difficult to control under these conditions.
Officials recommend avoiding outdoor burning, properly disposing of smoking materials, and using extra care with equipment that may generate sparks. Motorists are also urged to keep vehicles off dry grass.
Conditions are expected to improve later in the evening as winds diminish and humidity begins to recover.
