Raleigh, North Carolina – Several roads in Cary were underwater by late Wednesday morning as flash flooding surged across parts of central North Carolina, prompting a life-threatening warning from the National Weather Service.

According to the NWS Raleigh office, more than 3 inches of rain have fallen across parts of northeastern Chatham and northwestern Wake counties, with flash flooding already occurring. The warning remains in effect until 3 p.m., with rainfall still ongoing and conditions deteriorating.

Major impacted areas include Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, Morrisville, and Holly Springs. Flooding has been reported near William B. Umstead State Park and along low-lying stretches of roads near Research Triangle Park. Drivers are urged to avoid travel and heed barricades. “Turn around, don’t drown” remains the key advice, especially in flood-prone underpasses and near streams.

Local emergency officials warn that floodwaters can rise quickly and unexpectedly. Commuters should delay travel and residents near creeks or drainage channels should move to higher ground immediately.

More rainfall is possible through the afternoon, and additional alerts could be issued if conditions worsen.
