BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Morning drivers across New York’s Southern Tier face dangerous conditions Friday as dense fog reduces visibility to near zero along I-81 and I-86. Law enforcement warns motorists to slow down, use headlights, and leave extra distance on the roads until the advisory expires at 9 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the Dense Fog Advisory covers Broome, Chenango, Tioga, and nearby counties, extending into northern Pennsylvania. Visibility is as low as a quarter-mile in spots, with patchy fog expected to clear by mid-morning before sunny skies return.

The break in the weather won’t last long. Forecasters expect increasing clouds Friday night, followed by showers and possible thunderstorms Saturday, September 6. Rainfall totals could reach more than an inch in some areas, with the heaviest downpours likely along the Finger Lakes and Catskills. Outdoor events, including football games and weekend festivals, may face delays or cancellations.

Sunday looks calmer with sunshine and highs in the low 70s. Cooler nights will bring early signs of fall, with lows dipping into the mid-40s by Sunday night. Early next week turns sunny and dry, setting up a pleasant stretch for school and work commutes.

Residents should remain alert for Saturday’s storms and plan around changing conditions. More updates may follow as the weekend develops.
