BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Isolated to scattered snow showers could move across central New York Wednesday afternoon and evening, with a risk of brief snow squalls that may affect travel, the National Weather Service said.

According to the National Weather Service office in Binghamton, the highest chance for snow squalls is late Wednesday, with the most favorable window between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Forecasters said overall impacts are expected to remain low because surface temperatures are forecast to be relatively warm, limiting accumulation on many roadways.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for northern Oneida County until 7 a.m. Thursday. The weather service said lake-effect snow showers are expected to become more concentrated north of the Interstate 90 corridor late Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Additional snowfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected through 7 a.m. Thursday for northern Oneida County, the agency said. Elsewhere in the region, forecasters described the pattern as isolated to scattered showers with generally light accumulations.

Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions in any snow squall, including sudden drops in visibility and quick slushy or slick spots, even if temperatures are marginal. Commuters traveling during the Wednesday evening drive may see the most changeable conditions during the 4 to 10 p.m. window.

The weather service urged residents to monitor later updates as bands can develop and shift quickly, particularly in lake-effect setups that concentrate snowfall over narrow areas. Localized bursts could still create short-term hazards even where overall impacts are expected to remain limited.
