Binghamton, NY – A potent weather system is expected to bring rain, sleet, and gusty winds to Central New York beginning late Wednesday afternoon and continuing into early Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Thursday for portions of the Finger Lakes region, including Syracuse, Ithaca, Penn Yan, and Cortland. Wind gusts are forecast to peak between 35 and 44 mph, particularly in elevated areas and open valleys.

Precipitation will develop from west to east beginning late afternoon Wednesday. Areas such as Oneonta, Norwich, and Montrose have a 65% or greater chance of rain between 6 p.m. and midnight, while sleet or freezing rain could mix in across the higher elevations of the western Catskills and northern Oneida County before transitioning to all rain.

The strong winds combined with wet surfaces may lead to slippery roads, minor tree damage, and isolated power outages. Commuters are urged to drive cautiously and secure outdoor objects. Evaporational cooling could also cause brief wintry mixes at onset.

Residents are advised to monitor local alerts and stay updated through Thursday morning as conditions gradually improve after sunrise.
