Oswego, NY – A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued for Oswego County as forecasters expect heavy snow, strong winds, and treacherous travel conditions late this week. The warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday through 7 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Meteorologists predict 6 to 12 inches of snow, especially in areas under persistent lake effect snowbands. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will contribute to blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility and creating whiteout conditions at times.
The heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday evening through Friday, coinciding with busy Thanksgiving travel across central New York. Travel along Route 104, I-81, and other regional highways may become extremely hazardous as snowbands shift and intensify.
Forecasters warn that roads will quickly become snow-covered and slippery, and power outages are possible where wind gusts down tree branches. The National Weather Service advises residents to delay nonessential travel during the height of the storm and to keep emergency kits in vehicles, including flashlights, blankets, and food supplies.
Snow intensity is expected to vary across Oswego County, with the most severe conditions likely near the eastern shores of Lake Ontario.
