Boonville, N.Y. – The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Freeze Warning for Northern Oneida County from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Thursday, followed by a Freeze Watch Thursday evening through Friday morning, as temperatures tumble into the 20s and low 30s. The stretch of back-to-back freezes is expected to end the growing season across the Tug Hill and foothill regions of central New York.
According to meteorologists, the coldest air will arrive overnight Wednesday under clear skies and light winds, with a hard freeze likely in outlying valleys and rural areas north of Rome and Boonville. A reinforcing shot of even colder air Thursday night will push lows into the mid-20s, potentially damaging unprotected pipes and outdoor plumbing.
Residents are urged to cover or bring indoors any remaining plants, drain garden hoses, and wrap exposed pipes. Agricultural operations and home gardeners should prepare for season-ending frost impacts.
The freeze will be followed by a bright but chilly Thursday, with highs only in the upper 40s. A slow moderation is expected over the weekend, though nights will stay cold enough for patchy frost through early next week.
Drivers along Route 12 and the Adirondack Scenic Byway should watch for frost on shaded stretches before sunrise.
