BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – A cold front sweeping across New York today is expected to trigger showers and scattered thunderstorms, with the potential for isolated severe storms through this evening. Residents in central and southern New York could see damaging wind gusts topping 58 mph and heavy downpours during peak travel hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the strongest storms are most likely between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. as the front pushes east. The greatest risks include damaging straight-line winds capable of downing trees and power lines, along with pockets of flooding in poor drainage areas. Occasional lightning may also disrupt outdoor activities.
The marginal risk zone covers much of the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Mohawk Valley, with areas such as Ithaca, Syracuse, Elmira, and Oneonta included in the storm threat. Emergency crews are urging drivers to watch for sudden ponding on roadways and to secure loose outdoor items ahead of the gusty winds. Power outages remain a possibility if lines are struck by falling branches.
Storm chances diminish later tonight as the front exits eastward, but forecasters warn that additional alerts may be issued if storms intensify.
