Binghamton, NY – A blast of cold Canadian air is set to bring a widespread freeze to central and southern New York tonight, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton.

Forecasters say conditions will remain cool and dry today under mostly sunny skies, with high temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to low 50s across much of the region. A strong area of high pressure will build in from the north, ending lake-effect showers and ushering in a surge of colder air.

By tonight, northerly winds will funnel cold, dry air southward from Canada, dropping overnight lows into the upper 20s and low 30s. The NWS warns that widespread freezing temperatures are expected across much of the Southern Tier, Finger Lakes, and Mohawk Valley.

“Tonight will bring a widespread freeze across the region,” the NWS Binghamton office stated early Sunday, October 26. The agency advises residents to take precautions by covering or bringing indoors any sensitive plants and disconnecting outdoor hoses to prevent freezing damage.

While the cold start will linger Monday morning, daytime highs are expected to rebound slightly into the 40s and 50s with continued sunshine. Another reinforcing shot of cool air could keep temperatures below normal through midweek before gradual warming late in the week.
