Binghamton, N.Y. – Gardeners and early commuters across central New York will want to act fast — a sharp cold snap early Tuesday could drop temperatures to 32°F, triggering a Frost Advisory and risking damage to sensitive plants.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the advisory is in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday, May 20, for Broome, Tompkins, Tioga, Chemung, and surrounding counties. Temperatures near freezing may damage outdoor vegetation if left uncovered.

Sensitive plants should be brought indoors or covered tonight, especially in low-lying or rural areas. Cities like Ithaca, Elmira, and Binghamton are included in the advisory area. Motorists along I-81 and Route 17 may also see reduced visibility early Tuesday due to patchy frost near the ground.

Tuesday will recover quickly, with highs near 64°F under mostly sunny skies. But moisture builds again by Tuesday night, bringing clouds and setting the stage for a rainy stretch.

Wednesday and Thursday look soggy, with a 90% chance of rain both days. Wednesday will feel cooler with a high near 56°F. Showers continue Thursday into Friday morning, with occasional breaks by Friday afternoon.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday and Sunday bring a small chance of showers, with highs near the mid-60s. It won’t quite feel like full summer yet, but it’s trending milder.

🌱 Reminder: Protect outdoor plants before bedtime. Another frost is unlikely after Tuesday — but wet weather will dominate midweek.
