Binghamton, NY – A sharp change in the air is coming to the Southern Tier this weekend as the first snow of the season looms. Light rain is expected to shift to a wintry mix late Saturday evening, with snow likely developing across higher elevations of central and southern New York into early Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will drop quickly Saturday night as a cold front sweeps through, allowing rain to mix with — and briefly change to — snow before sunrise Sunday. Roads along I-81 and rural hilltops near the Catskills and Susquehanna Valley may turn slick, especially in shaded or untreated areas.

While significant accumulation is not expected, grassy surfaces and elevated spots could see a light coating by daybreak. Winds will turn northwest at 15 to 25 mph, adding a brisk chill to early morning air. By mid-morning Sunday, conditions should improve as clouds begin to break and temperatures rise back into the low 40s.

This marks the region’s first official taste of winter, setting the stage for what forecasters believe could be an active November pattern. Long-range models point to stronger cold fronts and more consistent snow chances developing between November 8 and 20 — potentially affecting early holiday travel across upstate New York and Pennsylvania. Residents are encouraged to finish outdoor work and prep winter gear now, as the season’s tone is beginning to change.
