Binghamton, New York – Travel conditions across central New York and the southern tier are expected to worsen quickly Tuesday afternoon as freezing rain and snow combine to create slick, hazardous roads during the evening commute and overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 3 p.m. Tuesday to 4 a.m. Wednesday for Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, and Sullivan counties, along with Susquehanna and northern Wayne counties in Pennsylvania. A light glaze of ice is expected as precipitation transitions from scattered snow showers to freezing rain through the afternoon and evening.
Farther north, an advisory remains in effect from late Tuesday morning through early Thursday for Onondaga, Madison, and Oneida counties. Snow totals of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with a brief lull this afternoon giving way to patchy freezing drizzle before lake-effect snow redevelops tonight into Wednesday. That setup increases the risk for icy patches on I-81, I-90, Route 12, and secondary roads across the Syracuse and Utica areas.
DOT crews will be treating major routes, but drivers are urged to slow down, avoid sudden braking, and allow extra stopping distance. Even light icing can make roads treacherous in a short time.
Conditions gradually improve south of the Thruway by early Wednesday, while lake-effect snow may linger into Wednesday night farther north. Additional advisories could follow if ice coverage or snowfall intensifies.
