Binghamton, N.Y. – Gusty thunderstorms and torrential downpours are set to impact Central New York from Sunday morning into late Monday, with officials warning of possible flash flooding across several counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for Broome, Onondaga, and surrounding counties until 7 p.m. Saturday. The main threat, however, arrives Sunday as slow-moving thunderstorms bring rounds of heavy rain and locally damaging wind gusts to cities including Syracuse, Ithaca, Binghamton, and Utica. Forecasters say the risk for isolated to scattered flash flooding will increase, especially along flood-prone roadways, low-lying areas, and small streams.
Drivers on Interstate 81, Route 17, and local roads should prepare for sudden ponding and reduced visibility during heavy downpours. Residents in Sullivan, Delaware, Otsego, and Cortland counties should remain alert for changing weather conditions. Emergency management urges residents to avoid flooded roadways, keep mobile devices charged, and check on neighbors—especially those without air conditioning as heat lingers through Saturday.
Storm spotters are encouraged to report severe weather to the National Weather Service. Showers and thunderstorms may linger through early Tuesday, with further advisories possible if threats continue.
