Watertown, New York – Rising water along the Black River could begin impacting nearby roads and low-lying areas by Tuesday morning as heavy rain combines with melting snow across the North Country.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Flood Watch is in effect for Jefferson, Lewis, and Oswego counties from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening. Multiple rounds of rain and embedded thunderstorms between late Monday night and Tuesday night could bring several inches of rainfall, accelerating snowmelt from the Tug Hill and western Adirondacks.
Communities including Watertown, Lowville, and Oswego face the highest risk, particularly in areas that drain into the Black River basin. Waterways in these regions may approach or exceed bankfull stage, increasing the chance of flooding near riverbanks, rural roads, and low-lying properties.
Runoff may also overwhelm drainage systems, leading to ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during heavier downpours. Drivers should avoid flooded roads and use caution during the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.
Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to monitor conditions closely and prepare for rapidly rising water. The flood threat will continue through Wednesday evening, with additional warnings possible as rivers respond to the prolonged rainfall.
