Syracuse, New York – Drivers across Central New York could face slippery roads and delayed travel beginning late Tuesday morning as a multi-day snow event targets key commute windows and major roadways across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 1 a.m. Thursday for Madison, Northern Oneida, Onondaga, and Southern Oneida counties. Snow totals are expected to reach 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts as lake effect bands develop.

A fast-moving clipper system is expected to lay down initial accumulations Tuesday morning into early afternoon, impacting routes including I-81, I-90, Route 12, and Route 20. As temperatures rise into the lower to mid-30s Tuesday afternoon, snow may briefly mix with freezing drizzle, creating a light glaze on untreated roads and sidewalks. Conditions could worsen again Tuesday night as colder air moves in, triggering lake effect snow showers that persist into Wednesday and deliver the bulk of the accumulation.

The most hazardous periods are expected during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes, especially in and around Syracuse, Utica, Rome, and Boonville. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check New York’s 511 system for real-time road conditions. Advisories remain in effect into early Thursday, and additional updates may follow if lake effect bands intensify.
