BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – Drivers across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania should expect a wet and slow commute Wednesday as periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms move through the region. The National Weather Service said ponding on roads and minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible through tonight, with rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches in some spots.

According to the NWS office in Binghamton, the heaviest rain is expected from late Wednesday morning through evening, especially along the I-81 and Route 17 corridors. While widespread flooding is not anticipated, poor drainage areas may see standing water that could make driving hazardous.

Showers are likely to taper off by early Thursday as drier air moves in. Sunshine is expected to return by the afternoon, with temperatures climbing into the low 70s. The stretch of dry, warmer weather is set to continue into the weekend, with highs reaching the mid-80s Saturday.

Residents are advised to use caution on the roads today, allow extra travel time, and avoid flooded intersections. Conditions will steadily improve late tonight, with no additional hazardous weather expected beyond Thursday.
