Binghamton, New York – Residents across a wide swath of New York and northeastern Pennsylvania should prepare for scattered to strong severe thunderstorms beginning this afternoon and continuing into the evening. Damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall, potentially leading to flash flooding, are the primary concerns as a cold front moves through the region.

According to the US National Weather Service (NWS) Binghamton NY, a “Slight Risk” (2 out of 5) for severe thunderstorms is in effect for areas along and east of I-81 in New York and most of NEPA. A “Marginal Risk” (1 out of 5) covers areas further west. Storms will initially develop in the Finger Lakes in the early afternoon, then track eastward, impacting the Southern Catskills and into the Poconos through the late afternoon and evening.

Cities like Syracuse and Binghamton, New York, along with Scranton and Wilkes-Barre in NEPA, could experience the most significant impacts. Heavy downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems, leading to localized flash flooding on roads and in low-lying areas. Travelers should be vigilant for sudden reduced visibility and hydroplaning conditions. Residents should secure any outdoor items and ensure sump pumps are functional.

The NWS urges residents to stay informed of rapidly changing conditions. Monitor local alerts and have a plan in place in case of power outages, which are possible due to strong winds. Warnings for these thunderstorms are expected to remain in effect through the late evening hours.
