Binghamton, N.Y. – A sharp chill is expected to grip Central New York late Wednesday night as a Freeze Watch takes hold, bringing temperatures down into the upper 20s and low 30s by Thursday morning. The cold blast could threaten crops, gardens, and even outdoor plumbing in parts of the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, the alert includes Northern Oneida, Delaware, and Otsego counties. Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could damage sensitive vegetation and lead to cracked pipes if outdoor systems remain unprotected.

Residents across towns like Cooperstown, Norwich, and Oneonta are advised to cover plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and disconnect hoses to avoid costly damage. In rural farming communities, orchard growers and vegetable producers may see impacts if crops are left exposed overnight.

Travel conditions are not expected to be hazardous, but morning commutes could start off with icy windshields and frosty conditions. The cold pattern is expected to be short-lived, with temperatures rebounding closer to seasonal averages by the weekend.

The Freeze Watch remains in effect through Thursday morning, and additional advisories may follow if colder air lingers.
