Hastings, NE – Snow-covered roads and gusty north winds will continue to reduce visibility across central Nebraska through midnight, creating dangerous travel conditions for the Thursday evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until midnight CST for Valley, Greeley and Nance counties. Snow totals will range from 5 to 7 inches, while sustained north winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 35 mph push snow across roadways and create drifting.
Communities including Ord, Greeley, Fullerton and Genoa are seeing steady snowfall, with blowing snow cutting visibility along Nebraska Highways 11, 22 and 70. Open rural roads are especially vulnerable to drifting, where snow may quickly redeposit after plows pass through.
The combination of falling snow and wind will likely slow travel through the late afternoon and evening hours. While wind speeds will gradually decrease later tonight, reduced visibility may persist in exposed areas until snowfall tapers.
Drivers should avoid non-essential travel if possible, carry emergency supplies and check Nebraska 511 for updated road conditions. Conditions are expected to improve after midnight as winds ease and snowfall diminishes.
