Hastings, Nebraska – Low humidity and gusty winds are driving extreme fire danger across western Nebraska today, as a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. for areas west of Highway 281, including Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, southwest winds are expected to reach 15–20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. Relative humidity values will drop to between 15% and 20%, creating a volatile mix for rapid fire spread. Near-critical fire weather is also expected outside the official warning zone.

The warning covers much of central and western Nebraska, including Adams, Buffalo, and Hall counties. Fires that start may grow quickly and prove difficult to contain, particularly along dry grasslands and open fields near towns like Lexington and Phillipsburg.

Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, operating machinery that produces sparks, or any other activities that could ignite a flame. Firefighters remain on alert across the region.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in place until 9 p.m. Monday. Additional alerts may be issued if dry, windy conditions continue into Tuesday.
