Hastings, Nebraska – An extreme heat warning now blankets central Nebraska, where heat index values may spike to 109°F through Sunday night, posing a serious risk for heat-related illnesses and infrastructure strain.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the heat warning began at 12 p.m. Friday and continues through 12 a.m. Sunday, followed by an Extreme Heat Watch lasting until 9 p.m. Sunday. Dangerous temperatures will persist across counties including Hall, Adams, Buffalo, and Dawson, with overnight lows remaining in the upper 70s. Wind gusts from the south could reach 45 mph, but won’t provide much cooling.
Cities such as Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, and York are projected to experience sustained heat index values between 105°F and 109°F from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening. These values, among the highest of the year, will offer little relief even after dark.
Officials urge residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and check on neighbors—especially seniors and those without adequate cooling. Hydration and frequent shade breaks are essential, even in breezy conditions.
Warnings remain in effect through Sunday night, with the potential for additional advisories if conditions worsen.
