Kearney, Nebraska – Any spark could turn into a fast-moving grass fire by midafternoon as strong winds and critically low humidity peak across central and western Nebraska between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for areas west and southwest of the Tri-Cities, including Furnas, Gosper, Phelps, Kearney, and Harlan counties. Northwest to west winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 35 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 17 to 22 percent during peak heating hours.

Communities including Lexington, Holdrege, Cambridge, and Phillipsburg sit in the highest risk zone, where dry grasses and crop residue can ignite quickly. Even routine activities such as towing chains, operating equipment, or discarding cigarettes could start fires that spread rapidly across open land.

Emergency officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning and secure equipment that may create sparks. Fire crews could face difficult containment conditions due to wind-driven spread rates.

Conditions begin improving after sunset as humidity recovers and winds ease, but elevated fire danger may persist into the weekend if dry weather continues.
