HASTINGS, Neb. – Farmers and homeowners across central Nebraska should prepare for a sharp temperature drop this weekend, as a Freeze Watch takes effect Saturday evening through Sunday morning. Overnight lows could fall to around 28 degrees, threatening crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the watch includes Greeley, Sherman, Valley, Buffalo, Dawson, Furnas, Gosper, and Phelps Counties. Forecasters say clear skies and calm winds will allow cold air to settle quickly, creating ideal conditions for frost and hard freeze impacts.
Sensitive vegetation, fruit trees, and late-season crops are at risk. Residents are urged to cover plants, disconnect garden hoses, and ensure outdoor pipes are insulated before temperatures drop. Livestock owners should also verify water supplies remain unfrozen overnight.
The cold spell is expected to ease by Sunday afternoon, but additional frost advisories may follow early next week as high pressure keeps nights clear and chilly.
Warnings remain in effect through Sunday morning.
