Kearney, NE – Much colder air is moving into central Nebraska tonight, bringing the season’s first Freeze Warning to several counties across the region, according to the National Weather Service in Hastings.
The warning is in effect from 10 p.m. Saturday through 11 a.m. Sunday for Valley, Greeley, Sherman, Dawson, Buffalo, Gosper, Phelps, and Furnas counties, covering cities such as Kearney, Lexington, Holdrege, Cozad, and Ord.
Forecasters expect overnight lows between 29°F and 32°F, with widespread frost developing as skies clear and winds ease late Saturday night. These conditions could kill sensitive vegetation, damage late-season crops, and freeze unprotected outdoor plumbing.
The NWS advises residents to cover plants, wrap outdoor pipes, and disconnect hoses before temperatures fall. Rural and low-lying areas are likely to experience the coldest conditions through early Sunday morning.
Warmer temperatures are expected to return later Sunday, but another cold night is possible in parts of south-central Nebraska early next week.
