Hastings, NE – Bitter cold weather is gripping Nebraska, with subzero temperatures and wind chills as low as -25 degrees expected through Tuesday. A Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday, prompting warnings about frostbite and hypothermia risks.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, wind chill values could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The advisory impacts central and south-central Nebraska, including the Tri-Cities area. Residents are urged to bundle up in layers and limit outdoor exposure.
The cold snap will persist into midweek. Tuesday’s high is forecast to reach only 17°F, with wind chills remaining near zero during daylight hours. Overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, temperatures are expected to dip back to 3°F, with northwest winds keeping conditions bitter.
The extended forecast offers some relief as temperatures climb slightly toward the end of the week. Wednesday’s high is projected at 24°F under sunny skies, while Thursday may reach 35°F with partly cloudy conditions. However, the mornings will remain dangerously cold, with wind chill values of -10 to -15 degrees likely.
Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, pets, and elderly family members during this extreme cold. Ensure pipes are insulated and cars are equipped with emergency kits for potential breakdowns.
