Hastings, Nebraska – Strong winds, falling temperatures, and a brief period of light snow are impacting central Nebraska today as a powerful cold front moves through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, north-northwest wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph spread across the area early Sunday, with the strongest gusts expected during the morning hours. Winds are forecast to gradually weaken later this afternoon and evening.

A quick-hitting band of light snow is expected to move across the region this morning. Snowfall amounts are generally expected to range from a dusting to a few tenths of an inch, with localized totals near one inch possible in parts of northern areas. Snow onset occurred earliest in northwest locations between 3 and 6 a.m., reaching central areas between 5 and 8 a.m., and southeastern locations between 7 and 10 a.m. Snow is expected to end by early afternoon.

Forecasters said rain transitioned to snow early Sunday as temperatures dropped sharply. Temperatures will continue to fall through the day, with overnight lows dropping into the single digits and teens. Wind chills are forecast to fall as low as 16 degrees below zero by this evening and overnight.

The combination of strong winds and light snow may cause brief reductions in visibility and difficult driving conditions, particularly during the morning commute. Blowing snow may also impact open areas.

Residents are urged to secure loose objects, dress for bitter cold, and use caution while traveling. Motorists should be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions.

For commuters, students, and outdoor workers across central Nebraska, the rapidly changing weather may impact travel and safety throughout the day.

Additional updates will be issued by the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
