Omaha, Nebraska – Even light snowfall could create dangerous travel conditions across central and northeast Nebraska on Friday due to strong winds and blowing snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, snowfall amounts are expected to remain under 1 inch, but northwest wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour could significantly reduce visibility. Blowing snow may cause near-zero visibility at times, especially in open and rural areas.

Forecasters say light snow is possible Friday across central and northeastern Nebraska, with snow probabilities ranging from 50 to 80 percent. While accumulations will be minor, the combination of snow and strong winds is expected to create slippery road conditions and sudden visibility drops.

The Weather Service also highlighted a 20 percent chance of snow squalls, which could briefly intensify snowfall and wind, leading to rapidly deteriorating driving conditions. These squalls can occur with little warning and may catch drivers off guard.

Hazards outlined by the National Weather Service include slippery roadways, blowing snow, and dangerous travel conditions, particularly for those commuting or traveling longer distances. Drivers are urged to remain alert for sudden changes, slow down, and be prepared to adjust travel plans if conditions worsen.

Officials advise anyone planning travel through central or northeast Nebraska, or toward South Dakota, to monitor updated forecasts closely as Friday approaches.

No winter storm warnings were issued with this update, but the Weather Service emphasized that light snow should not be underestimated when paired with strong winds.
