Jackson, Mississippi – Gusty winds sweeping across central Mississippi Sunday could cause travel concerns before a significant temperature drop raises the risk of a hard freeze early this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Sunday until noon Monday for much of central Mississippi. South winds between 15 and 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected Sunday before shifting to the northwest overnight while remaining strong through Monday morning.
Cities including Jackson, Vicksburg, Meridian, Natchez, Starkville, Columbus, Brookhaven, and Greenwood could see the strongest winds during the afternoon and evening hours. Drivers on major routes such as Interstate 55, Interstate 20, and U.S. Highway 49 should use caution, particularly on open highways and bridges where crosswinds may be stronger.
Behind the windy conditions, colder air will surge into the region. A Freeze Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning, when temperatures could fall to around 20°F in parts of central Mississippi.
That level of cold could damage early spring crops, flowers, and other sensitive vegetation. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items during the windy conditions and prepare to protect plants before temperatures drop below freezing Monday night.
