Jackson, Mississippi – Sweltering heat will grip Mississippi and neighboring regions Thursday, with “feels-like” temperatures climbing as high as 110°F in Jackson, Greenville, and the Mississippi Delta. Residents across central, north, and west Mississippi—as well as southeast Arkansas and northeast Louisiana—face an urgent risk of heat illness, especially between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Heat Advisory remains in effect for a broad swath of the region, including cities like Vicksburg, Yazoo City, Greenwood, Natchez, and Starkville. The advisory warns of dangerously high heat index values due to soaring temperatures and humidity.

Communities from Columbus to Cleveland and as far south as Adams and Jefferson counties are advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly during the hottest afternoon hours. Health officials urge everyone to stay hydrated, wear light and loose clothing, and seek air conditioning whenever possible. Those working outdoors in places like Port Gibson, Bastrop, and Chicot County should take frequent breaks in shaded or cool environments and monitor for signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, or confusion.

This level of extreme heat can strain power grids and increase the risk of heat-related medical emergencies. Families are reminded to check on elderly relatives and neighbors, and never leave children or pets in parked vehicles—even briefly.

The heat advisory is set to expire by 7 p.m. Thursday, but forecasters caution that more alerts are possible as high summer temperatures persist.
