St. Cloud, MN – A late-season winter storm continued to impact central Minnesota overnight, keeping roadways slick across key counties including Stearns and Benton.
According to the National Weather Service Twin Cities office, light snow is expected to persist through 6 a.m. Thursday. Though additional snowfall will likely total less than one inch, roads in areas such as St. Cloud and Sauk Rapids remain at least partially snow-covered, creating challenging travel conditions during the early commute.
The Winter Weather Advisory, initially set to expire earlier, was extended until 6 a.m. to account for the lingering snowfall and hazardous road surfaces. Cities affected include St. Cloud, Sauk Rapids, Princeton, and Benson.
Drivers are advised to reduce speeds and allow extra travel time. Minnesota’s Department of Transportation urges residents to check current road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511mn.org.
While this system is beginning to weaken, the snow comes on the heels of an unusually mild start to spring. Central Minnesota averages less than two inches of snow for early April, making this advisory a reminder that winter weather can linger well into spring.
Temperatures are expected to rise gradually later Thursday, aiding in melting efforts by mid-morning.
