Grand Rapids, Michigan – Damaging winds are expected to continue across central Michigan on Monday, prompting a High Wind Warning through the evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. EST Monday for Isabella, Gratiot, Clinton, Ingham, and Jackson Counties. Affected communities include Mount Pleasant, Alma, Lansing, St. Johns, and Jackson.
Forecasters expect west winds sustained at 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 55 miles per hour. These winds are strong enough to down trees and power lines, increasing the likelihood of widespread power outages across the region.
Travel conditions may become hazardous, especially for high-profile vehicles such as tractor-trailers, delivery trucks, and buses. Sudden crosswinds could make driving difficult on open highways, bridges, and elevated roadways.
Emergency officials advise residents to remain indoors when possible, staying on lower levels of homes and away from windows during the strongest winds. Loose outdoor objects should be secured to prevent damage or injury from flying debris.
Drivers who must travel are urged to use caution, reduce speed, and remain alert for falling tree limbs, debris, or downed power lines. Power companies recommend ensuring mobile devices are charged and having flashlights ready in case of outages.
Winds are expected to gradually diminish later Monday evening as the warning expires, but officials caution that cleanup and isolated outages may continue after winds subside.
