Baltimore, Maryland – Drivers across central and northern Maryland could see snow rapidly coat major highways by late Sunday afternoon, setting up a slick and slow Monday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning for Frederick, Carroll, Northern Baltimore, Cecil, Southern Baltimore, and parts of Harford, Howard and Montgomery counties, along with Western Loudoun County in Virginia. Forecasters say 5 inches or more of snow are possible, with the heaviest accumulation expected late Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning as colder air locks in.

Snow may begin as early as Sunday morning, but road conditions are most likely to deteriorate after 3 p.m. Sunday. Travel along I-70 near Frederick, I-83 north of Baltimore, and I-95 in Cecil and Harford counties could become hazardous as snowfall rates increase. Secondary roads and untreated neighborhoods may turn snow-covered quickly after sunset.

The Monday morning commute faces the greatest risk for delays and closures, especially on bridges and overpasses that freeze first. Residents should plan alternate routes, allow extra travel time, and check for potential school or government schedule changes.

Snow is expected to taper by midmorning Monday, but additional advisories could be issued if totals trend higher.
