Baltimore, MD – Strong winds and periods of rain will sweep through central Maryland and the DC metro Friday, creating difficult travel conditions and the potential for isolated power outages heading into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Wind Advisory is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Friday for much of central and northeastern Maryland, including Baltimore, as well as parts of northern Virginia and the eastern panhandle of West Virginia. West winds of 20 to 30 mph are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph.
The strongest winds are likely during the afternoon and early evening, impacting travel along I-95, I-83, I-695, and exposed bridges around the Inner Harbor and Patapsco River. High-profile vehicles may struggle with crosswinds, and unsecured holiday decorations, trash cans, and light outdoor furniture could be blown around. Tree limbs may come down, resulting in a few scattered power outages.
Rain moves in overnight and lingers into Friday morning before tapering off. Gusty winds persist even after the rain ends, keeping conditions blustery into Friday evening. On the water, Gale Warnings remain in effect for the Chesapeake Bay and tidal Potomac, with dangerous conditions for marine interests.
Conditions improve Friday night as winds ease. The weekend turns quieter and seasonable, and looking ahead, Christmas Eve on Wednesday is currently trending dry and mild across the Baltimore–Washington corridor, favorable for holiday travel and last-minute plans. Wind advisories remain in effect through Friday evening, and additional updates may be issued if conditions change.
