Lexington, KY – Multiple Flash Flood Warnings remain in effect across central Kentucky this afternoon as torrential rain causes rapid flooding in Lexington, Shelbyville, and Louisville-area suburbs, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Louisville.
At 2:33 p.m. EDT, the NWS issued a Flash Flood Warning for Fayette County, including Lexington, where 1 to 3 inches of rain had already fallen. Radar indicates another 0.5 to 2 inches possible, prompting concerns about flash flooding in urban areas, underpasses, and small streams. Impacted neighborhoods include Chevy Chase, Bryan Station, U.K. Arboretum, and Meadowthorpe.
Earlier in the day, a separate Flash Flood Warning was issued at 12:03 p.m. EDT for northeastern Bullitt, eastern Jefferson, Shelby, and northern Spencer counties, covering Shelbyville, Mount Washington, and Taylorsville. Between 1.5 and 3 inches of rain have already been recorded there, with continued downpours through late afternoon.
The NWS warns that flash flooding is ongoing or imminent and urges residents not to drive through high water. “Turn around, don’t drown,” officials said, emphasizing that most flood fatalities occur in vehicles.
Localized flooding of roads, yards, and low-lying areas is expected to persist through the evening commute. Residents should monitor local alerts, avoid travel if possible, and report flooding safely to law enforcement.
